  19. QUESTION:  Recently my great granddaughter who will be three years old has
  20. been diagnosed as having "Puppets" disease.  I have never heard of it before.
  21. She doesn't speak and is just starting to walk.  She is a pleasant child but
  22. has other problems.  She has had 10-12 occasions during the day when she is
  23. out of it for a few seconds, staring into space.  What can you tell me about
  24. this disease?  I would appreciate your answer.

  28. ANSWER:  This condition is known as the "Happy Puppet" or "Puppet Children".
  29. The name is based upon the fact that these children are easily provoked into
  30. prolonged paroxysms of laughter, and that they move with jerky, puppet like
  31. motions.  Along with a variety of alterations in the shape of the skull, the
  32. diagnosis is based upon a pattern of waves found during electroencephalography
  33. (EEG).  Unfortunately, mental deficiency forms part of this syndrome.
  34. Although the cause of the disease remains unclear, it is considered to be a
  35. rare form of infantile epilepsy.  It can be treated with prednisone (a
  36. cortisone like medication) and ethosuximide (an anticonvulsant medication).
  37. Improvement is frequently seen with these medications but may be temporary.
  38. The condition was first reported in the literature in 1965 by Dr. H. Angelman
  39. who discussed three cases.  The name "happy puppet" was coined by Drs. B.D.
  40. Bowen and P.M. Jeavons in 1967.
